Household Finance and Consumption Network - HFCN

The Household Finance and Consumption Network (HFCN), which was established in December 2006, consists of survey specialists, statisticians and economists from the ECB, the national central banks of the Eurosystem, number of national statistical institutes as well as external consultants.

HFCN has been tasked with the following main activities:

  •          implementing the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS);
  •          acting as a forum for research using survey data;
  •          further developing the HFCS.

More details about the network and its mission can be found at the ECB's website.

About the Survey and the purpose of the data

The Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS) collects household-level data on households' finances and consumption. The fieldwork for the first survey took place in late 2010/early 2011 in most countries and the second wave was implemented during 2014. Anonymised microdata from the first wave were made available to the researchers in April 2013 whereas data from the second wave are planned to be released in 2016/2017.

The HFCS is primarily focused on gathering structural microeconomic data on household's wealth and its components- financial assets, real assets and liabilities. The survey also collects other information in order to analyse the economic decisions taken by households (e.g. household income, intergenerational transfers, selected categories of consumption and credit constraints, as well as demographic characteristics of surveyed individuals such as age, education, or occupational status).

Harmonised Eurosystem Household Finance and Consumption Survey dataset from the first wave can be obtained filling in the request form.

Access to the Slovak HFCS data

Slovak HFCS data is available both for the first and second wave. NBS provides anonymised databases and other corresponding documents (questionnaire, description of variables, etc.) to the external research institutions and researchers only for purposes of academic and non-commercial analyses. Both waves of the Slovak HFCS data can be obtained by filling in the request form:  request_form.docx, request_form.pdf
