Archive Use by Public

Any person interested is authorised to make use of the written documents deposited in the NBS Archive in compliance with applicable legal standards. The Archive provides access to the documents directly by their exploration or in writing, by means of responses to the requests submitted by natural and legal persons. An access to archived documents may be obtained upon a written request sent to the following address:

The Archive is open to the public:
Tuesday - Thursday
from 9 a.m. till 12 p.m.
from 12:45 p.m. till 3 p.m.

Archived documents provided for studying purposes may only be used in the Archive´s reading room. In the reading room, the researchers also have inventories and inventory lists of funds, characteristics of individual financial institutions and publications from the auxiliary library at their disposal. The interested person, who has been granted access to archived documents for the purpose of studying, is obliged to follow the guidelines of the applicable research order.

Archived documents deposited in the NBS Archive are used mostly by researchers like professional domestic and foreign historians, economists and students specialising in the history of banking industry and economy in Slovakia. The Archive receives requests from natural and legal persons from Slovakia and abroad related to a look-up of archive documents. These are mostly written records required for restitution proceedings, e.g. copies of documents pertaining to personal accounts, savings books, deposits with agreed maturity and free deposits after the year 1945, mortgage loans, real estates, transfers of savings, mostly from the U.S.A. and Canada to Slovakia, valuables in a safe custody etc.

In the request for access to archived documents by means of transcript, excerpt, confirmation or copy the applicant is obliged to provide:

  1. first name and surname
  2. permanent residence
  3. available data about the required document
  4. purpose of use
  5. the first name, surname and address of the natural person or name and seat of the legal person for the needs of which the access to the archived documents is required
  6. statement whether he/she is the originator of archived documents, his legal successor or owner
  7. if requiring personal data stated in archived documents younger than 90 years, the applicant must submit a written approval with an attested signature of the natural person whose data it concerns or of his/her statutory representative and/or close person if the natural person in question is not alive anymore.
