The Archive of the Národná banka Slovenska (NBS) gathers over 180 archive funds and written files in an area of about 3,500 linear metres (lin.m), providing testimony about the creation, development and nature of the activities of former financial institutions created on the territory of Slovakia since the middle of the 19th century up to the present. They represent a valuable source for research on the individual stages of both the economic and political development of our country as well as the social position and social structure of its inhabitants in the 19th and 20th century. Written files and funds deposited in the NBS Archive may be divided into four basic groups based on the functions and/or subject of activities of their originators. Firstly, there are funds of central banking institutions, followed by commercial and also folk financial institutions. The last category is represented by written records of institutions constituted as separate legal entities while their creation and operation was directly linked with the operation of financial institutions or related to it.
