Exchange of Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins
Národná banka Slovenska exchanges Slovak banknotes and coins in compliance with Articles 3, 4 and 6 of the Act No. 659/2007 Coll. on the introduction of euro currency in the Slovak Republic and on amendments of certain acts, and with Articles 2 to 5 of the Decree of the Národná banka Slovenska No. 465/2001 Coll. stipulating a detailed procedure for receiving and handling legal tender and details on replacement of incomplete banknotes or otherwise damaged banknotes and coins, as amended by the Decree of the Národná banka Slovenska No. 607/2008 Coll. Act No. 297/2008 Coll. On protection against legalization of proceeds from criminal activity and on protection against financing of terrorism and on amendments and supplements to certain laws
I. General Information
Národná banka Slovenska exchanges Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins free of charge upon clients' requests in its Headquarters and local branches, in these places of exchange and opening hours for the public.
Exchange periods:
The submitter submits the Slovak banknotes and coins sorted by the denominations. When exchanging Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins the submitter shall not be entitled to the provision of any collector coins, commemorative coins or banknotes or coins of a specific design, type or series, including euro coins with a specific national side.
1. The exchange at the cash desks
a) in cash, while you wait, with no limit on the number of banknotes; in case of coins this applies if their number does not exceed 1 000 pieces;
The submitter fills in the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity), which is then signed by the submitter and provided to the teller with its proof of identity. At the exchange that exceeds 60 252 SKK (2 000 EUR) the submitter (entrepreneur and legal entity) submits either originals or verified copies of the documents from the official register or from other official evidence. The teller will pay out submitter the relevant equivalent in euro. The number of pieces for exchange, while you wait, can be modified with regard to operating and servicing possibilities of exchanging place.
b) in cash, by the date specified in the Client's Declaration and no later than within 30 calendar days after the submission of coins, if the number of coins submitted for exchange exceeds 1 000 pieces;
The submitter fills in the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and so-called the Client's Declaration and gives it proof of identity, on the basis of which he/she will be paid the equivalent of submitted coins in euro. When exchanging in the equivalent that exceeds 60 252 SKK (2 000 EUR) the submitter (entrepreneur and legal entity) submits either the originals or verified copies of the documents from official register or other official evidence. The teller will pay out submitter the relevant equivalent in euro.
c) in cash with its value at least 451 890 SKK (15 000 EUR), the submitter is obliged to report in written form such an exchange on the exchanging place at least 1 working day before or by telephone and when exchanging the cash has to submit filled relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity), his/her proof of identity and the originals or verified copies of the documents from official register or other official evidence.
2. If the submitter cannot realize the exchanging the money personally he/she can do so by post
If the submitter puts the account number in another financial institution as NBS on which the financial resources should be sent, the submitter will fill and send the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and continuously send the written confirmation of evidence such client in this institution.
If the submitter sends the money and the puts account number, which is kept in the evidence in foreign bank, the submitter fills the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and the Transfer order for cross border-transaction on its should be filled the account number and on which he/she applies to send the equivalent of submitted money in euro's and other data under instructions listed on relevant form application. The submitter also sends the confirmation of the foreign bank that he/she belongs to its client's database.
If the submitter does not require putting on the account the counter value, the submitter will send the money without filling the account number. The submitter fills the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and its identification data should verified by notary's office. The submitter will send such a form application verified by notary's office together with the money for its exchange. NBS will send back the relevant equivalent of financial resources by post.
II. Replacement for incomplete Slovak banknotes and otherwise damaged Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins
is carried out by means of exchanging them for undamaged euro banknotes and euro coins in the same exchange periods as specified in Article I.
Incomplete Slovak banknotes shall be replaced if an identifiable part of the banknote is submitted, provided that its total compact surface exceeds one half of the original surface of the banknote.
No replacement for Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins shall be provided:
- where they are suspected to have been forged or altered,
- where their damage constitutes a criminal offence,
- where they originate in a criminal offence,
- where they have been destroyed or lost,
- where their damage causes them to be unidentifiable,
- for incomplete coins where a part of the metal is missing, e.g. punctured coins,
- for banknotes and coins that have been damaged for the purpose of their impairment (distinctly marked by the text "SPECIMEN" or "VZOR", or banknotes damaged by five holes punctured symmetrically),
- for incomplete banknotes whose total compact surface does not exceed one half of the original surface of the banknote,
Any Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins damaged in this manner shall be collected from the submitter without compensation, against a confirmation of collection.
Natural persons and legal entities may, in justifiable cases, file a written request to the Národná banka Slovenska to be provided replacement for Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins that are not eligible for replacement; in such request, the submitter shall include his/her name, surname, permanent address or registered office, bank details and a detailed description of how the damage occurred.
