Exchange of Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins
Národná banka Slovenska exchanges Slovak banknotes and coins in compliance with Articles 3, 4 and 6 of Act No. 659/2007 Coll. on the Introduction of the Euro Currency in the Slovak Republic and on amendments to certain Acts, and with Articles 2 to 5 of Decree of Národná banka Slovenska No. 465/2001 Coll. stipulating a detailed procedure for receipt and handling of legal tender, and details on the replacement of incomplete banknotes or otherwise damaged banknotes and coins, as amended by Decree of Národná banka Slovenska No. 607/2008 Coll., as amended by Decree of Národná banka Slovenska No. 11/2011 Coll. Act No. 297/2008 Coll. On protection against Legalization of Proceeds from Criminal Activity and on Protection against Financing of Terrorism, and on amendments and supplements to certain Acts.
I. General Information
Národná banka Slovenska exchanges Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins free of charge upon the client's request at its Headquarters and local branches, in these places of exchange and in the hours of opening to the public.
Exchange periods:
The submitter submits the Slovak banknotes and coins sorted into denominations. When exchanging Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins, the submitter is not entitled to be provided with any collector coins, commemorative coins or banknotes or coins of a specific design, type or series, including euro coins with a specific national side.
1. Exchange at cash desks
a) in cash, while you wait, with no limit on the number of banknotes; in the case of coins, this applies if their number does not exceed 1 000 pieces;
The submitter completes the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity), which is then signed by the submitter and provided to the teller along with the proof of identity. On the occasion of an exchange that doesn't exceed 15 000 EUR, the submitter (entrepreneur and legal entity) submits either the originals or by notary verified copies of the identification documents. The teller will disburse to the submitter the relevant equivalent in EUR. The number of pieces for exchange while you wait may be modified with regard to the operational and servicing possibilities of the point of exchange.
b) in cash, by the date specified in the Client's Declaration and not later than within 30 calendar days after the submission of coins, if the number of coins submitted for exchange exceeds 1 000 pieces;
The submitter completes the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and the so-called Client's Declaration and provides proof of identity, on the basis of which he/she is to be paid the equivalent in EUR of the coins submitted . When exchanging an equivalent in a value less than 15 000 EUR the submitter (entrepreneur and legal entity) submits either the originals or by notary verified copies of the identification. The teller will disburse to the submitter the relevant equivalent in EUR.
c) in cash with a value of at least 15 000 EUR, the submitter is required to provide written notice of such an exchange to the point of exchange at least one working day in advance or by telephone; when exchanging the cash, the submitter is required to submit the completed relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity), his/her proof of identity and the appropriate identification documents (entrepreneur, legal entity).
2. If the submitter cannot perform the exchange in person, he/she may do so by post
A) with a value less than 100 EUR
If the submitter provides the account number in a financial institution other than NBS to which the financial resources should be sent, the submitter completes and sends the respective Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity)..
If the submitter sends the money and provides the number of an account held in a foreign bank, the submitter completes the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and the Transfer order for cross-border-transaction on which should be entered the account number to which he/she applies to send the equivalent of the money submitted in EUR and other data as per the instructions listed on the relevant application form..
If the submitter does not require the counter value to be entered on the account, the submitter will send the money without entering the account number. The submitter completes the respective Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity). The submitter sends the Money Exchange Coupon together with the money for its exchange. NBS will return the relevant equivalent of financial resources by post.
B) with a value 100 EUR and more
If the submitter provides the account number in a financial institution other than NBS to which the financial resources should be sent, the submitter completes and sends the respective Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and sends the written confirmation of evidence of being a client in this institution.
If the submitter sends the money and provides the number of an account held in a foreign bank, the submitter completes the relevant Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and the Transfer order for cross-border-transaction on which should be entered the account number to which he/she applies to send the equivalent of the money submitted in EUR and other data as per the instructions listed on the relevant application form. The submitter also provides a confirmation of the foreign bank that he/she belongs in its clients' database.
If the submitter does not require the counter value to be entered on the account, the submitter will send the money without entering the account number. The submitter completes the respective Money Exchange Coupon (natural person, entrepreneur, legal entity) and the identification data should verified by a notary's office. The submitter sends the application form verified by the notary's office together with the money for its exchange. NBS will return the relevant equivalent of financial resources by post.
II. Replacement for incomplete Slovak banknotes and otherwise damaged Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins
is performed by means of exchanging them for undamaged euro banknotes and euro coins within the exchange periods specified in Article I.
Incomplete Slovak banknotes are to be replaced if an identifiable part of the banknote is submitted, provided that its total compact surface exceeds one half of the original surface of the banknote.
No replacement for Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins is to be provided:
- where they are suspected of having been forged or altered,
- where their damage constitutes a criminal offence,
- where they originate within a criminal offence,
- where they have been destroyed or lost,
- where their damage causes them to be unidentifiable,
- for incomplete coins where a part of the metal is missing, e.g. punctured coins,
- for banknotes and coins that have been damaged for the purpose of their impairment (distinctly marked by the text "SPECIMEN" or "VZOR", or banknotes damaged by five holes punctured symmetrically),
- for incomplete banknotes whose total compact surface does not exceed one half of the original surface of the banknote,
Any Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins damaged in this manner are to be collected from the submitter without any compensation, against a confirmation of collection.
Natural persons and legal entities may, in justifiable cases, file a request in writing to Národná banka Slovenska to be provided with a replacement for Slovak banknotes and Slovak coins that are not eligible for replacement; in such a request, the submitter is to include his/her name, surname, permanent address or registered office, bank details and a detailed description of how the damage occurred.
