Jozef Makúch

Mr Makúch was born on 26 August 1953 in Podhájska.

In 1976 he graduated from the Faculty of National Economy of the University of Economics in Bratislava, the Department of Finance. Mr Makúch finished his postgraduate studies in 1985, and was appointed Associate Professor in 1989.

In July 1976, he joined the Czechoslovak State Bank as a Loan Inspector in the Bratislava Branch. In 1978 he was appointed Assistant Professor and in September 1989 Associate Professor at the Department of Finance of the Faculty of National Economy of the University of Economics in Bratislava. At the University of Economics, he worked as a Dean from 1991 to 1994. From January 1993 to December 1996 he served as a Member of the Bank Board of Národná banka Slovenska (NBS). In February 1994 he took the position of the Executive Director of the Research Section of NBS. In November 2000, Mr Makúch was appointed Chairman of the Financial Market Authority (FMA), and from April 2002 to December 2005 he served as a Chairman of the Board of Directors of the FMA.

In the position of the Chairman of the FMA Board of Directors he was responsible for the management and coordination of the supervision of the capital market, insurance and pension savings sectors. He represented Slovakia in the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR). He was also a representative in the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).

During his professional life, Mr Makúch attended several educational programmes for top executive officers in the field of banking and monetary policy organized by international financial institutions (International Monetary Fund, World Bank) and foreign central banks, and delivered lectures at conferences in Slovakia and abroad.

Since 1 February 2012 he has been a visiting professor at the University of Economics in Bratislava.

Jozef Makúch is a member of the Academic Council of the Faculty of National Economy of the University of Economics in Bratislava, the Editorial Board of the journals BIATEC and Journal of Central Banking Theory and Practice and "Účtovníctvo, audítorstvo, daňovníctvo" (Accounting, Auditing, Taxation) and of the scientific periodical of the Faculty of Finance of the Matej Bel University, and he is as well a member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal of the University of Economics in Prague Acta Oeconomica Pragensia. Mr Makúch is the author of dozens of professional works - textbooks, monographs, research works, etc., published in Slovakia and abroad.

Mr Makúch was reappointed a Member of the Bank Board of the NBS effective from 1 January 2006. From 1 February 2007 he served as the NBS Executive Director.

On 12 January 2010, the President of the Slovak Republic appointed Jozef Makúch Governor of NBS.

Mr Jozef Makúch is a member of the ECB Governing Council, a Governor in the International Monetary Fund and an Alternate Governor in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

He speaks English and has a passive knowledge of German and Russian.

He is married with three children.
